HOW TO DRIVE SAFELY IN HEAVY RAIN?

Driving in the rain can be both scary and hazardous. Driving in severe weather can significantly increase the risk of a dangerous situation for you, your family and other drivers.

Serious climate demands your full focus, so make sure to reduce driving diversions to keep your attention completely on the road.

Remember that occasionally the best the choice you can make is to abstain from driving altogether and to stay off the road totally until the climate clears.

1. Slow Down

Amid any nasty climate or horrible driving conditions, your first reaction should always be to adjust your speed accordingly. Wet roads reduce your traction, and slowing down reduces the chances of you skidding out, and will give you more time to react to emergencies.

2. Stay Focused

When you're in the driver's seat, it's essential to pay attention to the road, other vehicles, and pedestrians. This is especially true in the downpour when you can't see too, and your ability to stop might be prevented by the smoothness of the road.

3. Maintain a Safe Distance Between Cars

Keep a greater distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you. Stopping your vehicle will be more difficult when driving in the rain. Keep up a separation of a few vehicle lengths between your vehicle and other vehicles.

Not only does this give you more time to stop or adjust if necessary, but it also prevents reduced visibility caused by the spray from other cars.

4. Avoid Heavy Braking

Try to slow your vehicle by taking you foot off the accelerator earlier than you normally would in preparation to slow down or stop.

Slamming on the brakes can cause you to slide forward, and you won’t be able to control the car. Hitting the brakes too hard can also force water into your brakes, making them less effective.

5. Take turns slowly

Turning too quickly on a wet road can cause your tires to hydroplane, and this means you won’t be able to control the car and could skid out. Whenever you have a turn coming up, signal early and start slowing down sooner than you would in good conditions.

6. Pull over if necessary

Never be afraid to pull over to the side of the road if you don’t feel comfortable driving. If you can't see the sides of the road, the cars in front of you, or your surroundings at a safe distance, pull over.
